No Excuses Run 2007 - Open Letter
18th Aug 2007
Dear runners,

A big thank you for participating in the run as representatives
& friends of the
deaf community (here, 'deaf' refers to everyone who calls himself or herself
Deaf, deaf, hard of hearing, hearing-impaired, unilateral hearing loss, etc. We
are all one community!)

You are running for an important cause: To show the public that the Deaf
CAN!

This run is called the Deaf-initely No Excuses Run because we want to tell
employers that they have no excuses to not give deaf people employment
opportunities. Our physical disability does not mean we are any less capable
than hearing people. However, we can only prove ourselves if employers give
us the chance to show what we can do and what we have to offer. There are
no excuses to avoid employing the deaf.

So each and every one of you have an important role to play in this run. Keep
in good shape and let your legs do the talking on 26th August!

Even after the run, you can still champion this cause. Some possibilities are:

  • giving it your all at your present job, and showing others, such as your
    colleagues, that the Deaf CAN,
  • speaking with employers, such as your boss, or others, about the
difficulties deaf people face, and what they can do e.g., assistive
technology (such as email, SMS, instant messaging),
  • doing the same with your hearing friends, or volunteers or such, to help
them understand the needs of the deaf better, or
  • recommending suitable deaf candidates for vacancies at your
    organisation/workplace.

There are many more other things you can do to show that the Deaf CAN.

All the best for the run! On the day itself, we have a line-up of programs from
9 am to 10.30 am, including photo-taking, so we hope to have your
participation and support for this. Do stay with us till 10.30 am.

See you on 26th August! :)
"Boleh" means "Can" in Malay.
"Deaf-initely Boleh!" means "The Deaf Can!"

Our Mission
Being deaf doesn't mean less. A number of
deaf persons in Singapore are leading a full
life in school, at work, and in other social
contexts. Yet many more continue to function
at below their potential because of limitations,
real, imposed, or otherwise.

Deaf-initely Boleh!, is conceived to transform
the landscape for the deaf community, to help
them integrate more effectively into society at
all levels.
